Research plan

NAVIGATE is utilizing the advanced Norwegian Earth system model (NorESM) to conduct comprehensive research and experiments on climate interventions and CO2 emissions, organized into specialized work packages for efficient collaboration and knowledge transfer among leading scientists.

NAVIGATE is organized into three scientific and one coordination work packages (WPs) to ensure efficient implementation of the project objectives and to streamline transfer of knowledge among the project team. Each WP is led by senior scientists, prominent in their respective fields. The structure, tasks, and timeline are designed to promote cross WPs interactions and knowledge exchange.

Our primary research tool is the national infrastructure Norwegian Earth system model (NorESM), a state-of-the-art model developed through cooperations among established climate research institutes in Norway.

The NorESM is ideally placed to address the multi-dimensional complex research questions in NAVIGATE. It features advanced representations and interactions between various physical and biogeochemical components in the Earth system. Its an established model, which has contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports.

The latest version will include the Greenland icesheet, a demographically-enabled terrestrial vegetation, a representation of permafrost carbon, and improvements in ocean biogeochemistry. These features allow for (i) a more realistic implementation of climate intervention of Carbon Dioxide Removal (e.g., Ocean Alkalinization, afforestation/reforestation, and Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage) and Solar Radiation Management (e.g., Stratospheric Aerosol Injections).

All experiments in NAVIGATE will be performed in CO2 emissions-driven mode, allowing for accurate estimates of the global carbon budget that includes non-linear feedbacks across atmosphere, ocean, land, and cryosphere.
